Hand-knotted carpet made in the workshops of Elisabeth de Saedeleer.
The design is an exact replica of the carpet that Ivan da Silva Bruhns made for the flat "Trouville" on the liner "Normandie" (1935) and on which the name of Da Silva Bruhns clearly appears.
Da Silva Bruhns usually had his designs made in the weaving mills of Savigny.
There are no details of personal contacts between Elisabeth de Saedeleer and da Silva Bruhns. Since the design is a very faithful representation of the motif of the "Normandie" carpet, it is hard to imagine that the Saedeleer was not in possession of the design. One wonders how Elisabeth de Saedeleer got it, but the fact that she clearly has interwoven her signature in it, indicates that it is not a copy made with malicious intent.
Ivan Da Silva Bruhns
Inspired by the 1922 exhibition in Marseille, he renewed the art of carpet making by being inspired by Oceanic,African and pre-Columbian art, before establishing the Savigny-sur-Orge factory.
