Carpet-knotting is an old tradition in Spain and was introduced by the Saracenes. Almeria, Cuenca and Alcaraz had a lot of looms in their workshops. In the beginning the knotted were on one single warp but later the Turkish symmetrical knot was often used. The 15th century was the golden age of carpet-weaving in Spain. The series El Almirante (now in the Philadelphia Art Museum) was made for Don Fadrique Enriquez with a pattern showing his coat of arms
