After Rey, Tabriz, Qazvin and Ispahan, Teheran only became the capital of Persia in 1796.
Teheran never acquired prestige as a weaving center despite some interesting productions. Royal manufactures were opened already at the end of the 18th century but did not really succeed in developing a personal and recognizable style. There is not much documentation left. Teheran played a more important commercial part considering its role as a centralizing bazar for export.
Over time, the number of workshops declined. Shirket-i-farsh, a parastatal company that had opened workshops in all the major centres of Iran, closed its doors in 1978.
There is little information to give a structured overview of this little-known, and therefore little-loved, production. It is above all the economic and political significance of the capital that has drawn attention to it.
