Large carpets are not part of the tradition of Tibetan weavers. It was only towards the end of the 1950s that Tibetans who had fled their country following the Chinese invasion began to work on the larger looms made available to them by Western companies. But this only applies to late production in Nepal and northern India.

Before this period, the smallest formats were meditation rugs or saddle rugs.
The most common sizes were around 80 x 180 cm and were used as wall decorations, floor mats or sleeping mats.

Next came the long, narrow column carpets that were placed around the pillars of temples. They usually depicted a dragon and were designed to create the illusion of a dragon wrapping itself around the column.

This piece, made in two parts that were joined together, proves that there were no looms of this width.
To the best of our knowledge, the size of this square carpet is nowhere to be found in specialist literature.
