Suzani means ‘needle’ in Farsi and it is the name used for the needlework from Uzbekistan that was part of the dowry.
Since the 19th century they were very popular on the European market.
The silk thread was embroidered on narrow patches of silk or linen. The pattern was drawn with a pencil and covered with silk embroidery. When the needlework was ready the patches were sewn together. They would show that the young girls in the family would be perfect and skilled housewives.
