Rasht is a city on the Caspian Sea, capital of the northern Iranian province of Gilan.
This city is little important in terms of knotting carpets, but all the more famous for its embroideries.
Drawings were designed on full-size cartons and were executed in workshops. Pieces of fabric were brought together like a patchwork, thus forming the border, small niches or midfield.
The drawing was then usually traced on the base fabric with ink, or small holes were punctured through the carton placed on the fabric to find the main connection points.
Motifs were cut out (leaves, flowers, etc.) and attached to the base fabric by a kind of chain stitch that outlined the motif.
Portraits of kings and distinguished persons were also embroidered in Rasht using the same technique, and clothes were cut from rich fabrics. Tents for dignitaries were also manufactured and richly decorated.
